Battery Life Enhancements

Windows XP Professional extends battery life by managing the way your laptop uses power. Now you can work longer on battery power and more accurately forecast how long your batteries will last. Support for version 2.0 of the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) specification improves hardware and operating system coordination, allowing Windows XP Professional to monitor the CPU activity and reduce unnecessary power consumption. Windows XP Professional can more accurately monitor the amount of battery power remaining and the rate of drain on the battery, which can prevent your system from shutting down prematurely.

Standby and Hibernation

When you stop working, Standby gradually reduces power to parts of your system that are not in use-the hard drive, the monitor, and so on-saving power while keeping your computer available for you to start working again almost instantly. Hibernate saves your desktop state with all open files and documents as you left them, and then it powers down your computer. Because Windows XP systems detect when batteries are nearing depletion, laptop systems will enter Hibernate mode to preserve data before the battery fails. If the system is in Standby when the battery is running low, Windows XP will wake the system, preserve your data, and then enter Hibernate mode before the batteries fail. Waking your computer from Hibernate mode is much quicker than a fresh startup, and Windows XP wakes from Hibernate faster than any earlier version of Windows.

Multimonitor and DualView Support

Multimonitor can help you improve your productivity by allowing you to work on multiple screens. Multimonitor support allows you to install multiple video cards in your computer and run two or more monitors with one system. With DualView in Windows XP Professional, you can attach two monitors to your computer on the same display adapter and use each monitor to work on a different document. DualView enables the adapter's two interfaces to display different outputs at the same time. In many laptop computers, you can run the internal LCD display as well as an external monitor. A wide range of high-end display adapters support this functionality for desktops computers.

Offline Files and Folders

When you cannot connect to the Internet, or to your company's network, you can use Offline Files and Folders to work with data and documents as if you were online. You select which network-based files and folders you need. Then, Windows XP Professional copies the files to your laptop before you disconnect from the network, so you can work on them whenever you want. Offline Files and Folders also allows you to select Web pages that you want for browsing on your computer when you are not connected to the Internet. When you reconnect, your files are synchronized with those on the network server. Synchronization Manager makes sure you always have the latest versions, online or offline. With Windows XP Professional, offline folders can now be encrypted to provide the highest level of security. The Credential Manager in Windows XP Professional allows you to securely access information on your corporate network without having to remember and type in multiple passwords.

Hot Docking

Windows XP Professional lets you connect or disconnect your notebook computer to and from its docking station without changing hardware configuration or rebooting.

Wireless Networking

Windows XP Professional provides significant enhancements for wireless networking. High-speed wireless networks based on the Wi-Fi 802.11b standard are being installed in businesses, on campuses, and in public places, such as airports and coffee shops. Windows XP provides Zero Configuration support, allowing a laptop with a wireless adapter card to automatically detect and connect to wireless access points within range.

Media Sense

Windows XP detects signals from wireless devices within range, and notifies you if your laptop is near a network access point, or even another Windows XP-based computer with which you can share files and other resources using wireless transmission.

Network Location Awareness

If you use your laptop on more than one network, you may have faced the problem of using a static IP address at one location and dynamic IP addressing at another. For example, you may use dynamic addressing (DHCP) at work, but a static IP address at home to connect with a broadband Internet Service Provider. Windows XP Professional includes Network Location Awareness that allows you to move between wired networks, such as your business network and home network, without reconfiguring your laptop.
